Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts
http://www.lvm.orgMISSION Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts (LVM), a private, nonprofit organization established in 1972, promotes literacy skills that empower adults to realize their goals. To achieve this mission, LVM provides free, private, confidential and individualized tutoring to adults in basic literacy and English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) through the use of professionally trained and supported volunteer tutors. DESCRIPTION LVM is the leading provider of literacy and ESOL tutoring services to 1000 adults in the state through its network of 12 program locations, including Boston. LVM specializes in teaching adults whose literacy skills are below the 6th grade level or who have limited conversational English skills, especially those who cannot or will not attend classes due to fear, embarrassment, past failure in school or difficulties with child care, transportation or scheduling. The one-to-one relationship between the tutor and student fosters a high level of trust, encouragement and reassurance, which are all critical factors in student success and retention. Prior to being certified and matched to work with an adult, each volunteer tutor must successfully complete a 2-hour orientation and an 18-hour training. Once matched, the volunteer provides 2 hours per week of tutoring instruction for 9 to 12 months and is supported by LVM’s professional staff. IMPACT The results o f LVM’s tutoring are literally life-changing. Once adults learn to read, write and communicate in English , they go on to find better jobs, start new careers, read to their children, obtain US citizenship, and become more confident, self-reliant members of their community. In addition, LVM volunteers contribute free hours of tutoring instruction to residents of the state. This instruction, valued at $654,136 in program year 2008, wold not be possible without the volunteer tutors who donate their time.
