Become a Mentor with Partners for Youth with Disabilities!
About the organization: Partners for Youth with Disabilities (PYD)’s mission is to create a world where young people with disabilities live self-determined lives filled with dignity, pride, and purpose. Along with various other programs, Partners for Youth with Disabilities works towards this mission by matching affirming and supportive adults to youth with disabilities, in its Mentor Match Program. (This program has gone virtual due to Covid-19, but will return to in-person mentoring once it is safe to do so.) PYD is looking for caring adults to serve as mentors for young people ages 6-24 with disabilities. Their goal in their one-to-one mentoring program, is to empower young people with disabilities to meet their full potential by matching them with a caring adult mentor, who serves as a role model and a friend. The relationship formed between the mentor and mentee has proven invaluable in improving the social and intellectual development and independence of youth and the experience is equally rewarding to the mentors! Please note: A large demographic of PYD's mentees include male-identifying, bilingual, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color who wish for mentors who identify similarly. And a number of the mentees on our waitlist need male mentors who know/ are fluent in ASL (American Sign Language), and/or Spanish Commitment (please read): Initially, matches are expected to commit to one year, and meet in-person for at least 4 to 6 hours a month, and are in touch on a weekly basis by phone or email. Please note, in light of COVID-19, the in person requirement is currently waived and all programming is virtual until further notice. At this moment, PYD has about 60 young people waiting to be paired with mentors. This is a one-of-a-kind volunteer mentoring opportunity and they hope to welcome you as a mentor! This is an Express Interest Volunteer Opportunity. After selecting "Express Interest", someone from Partners for Youth with Disabilities will contact you with next steps.
